This lovely penstemon is found only in the vicinity of Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas and adjacent Mexico. Flower spikes emerge from a rosette of large elliptical green leaves in the spring. Cardinal red blossoms dangle from the spikes from April through June, providing ample nectar for hummingbirds. Allow spikes to dry after flowering, then collect seed and sprinkle around the garden. Big Bend Penstemon needs good drainage and prefers light filtered shade in low deserts.
