Malvaviscus drummondii ‘Big Momma’ (Turks Cap)

Malvaviscus drummondii 'Big Momma'
Big Momma Turks Cap

This native of the southeastern U.S. is ideal for shady locations in desert climates. In the summer and fall, this shrubby perennial produces red flowers that are shaped like a Turk's cap. While deciduous, it sprouts quickly in the spring to produce a 4-6 ft tall multi-stemmed plant covered with velvety leaves. This introduction by Greg Grant has flowers that are 1/3 larger than the species. Cut back hard after it enters fall dormancy. The flowers are rich in nectar, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. It also produces an edible fruit that provides food for birds and small mammals.
