Walk in Beauty™ is a series of cold-hardy Prickly Pears with a wide array of flower colors. Famed Colorado plantsman Kelly Grummons has been developing these hybrids for years in his gardens up in the Denver area, selecting especially for coldhardiness, drought tolerance, and beauty. We have trialed these plants in our experimental garden in Glendale, AZ for the past two years to see how they fare in our extreme summer heat, and they have done remarkably! We are now offering 5 different forms that should thrive in all areas of the Southwest: Apricot Glory, Garnet Glow, Mandarin Sunrise, Ruffled Papaya, and Watermelon Man. Some of these varieties are nearly spineless, but all will have some glochids. The growth habit is low and spreading, with mature sizes being around 6-8" tall by 3-4' wide. Blooms will start in April here in the low desert, and more towards summer at higher elevations. These Opuntias have fared well in full sun and reflected heat in our garden, only needing water about twice a week during summer planted in #5 containers. Plants will do best in a well drained cactus mix if in containers, and will do quite well in our native soil too. Just be careful not to overwater, and make sure plants have good drainage.
