Brahea armata (Mexican Blue Palm)

Brahea armata
Mexican Blue Palm, Big Blue Hesper Palm, Blue Fan Palm, Blue Hesper Palm, Gray Goddess, Mexican Blue Fan Palm, Short Blue Hesper, Brahea elegans, Brahea roezlii, Erythea armata, Erythea clara, Erythea elegans

Huge shimmery blue leaves make this palm easy to identify and adore. Its thick trunk provides even more presence. The petioles of the fan-shaped leaves are lined with large wicked spines. Long arching spikes of creamy white flowers decorate the tree in late spring and summer. Mexican Blue Palm is native to Baja California, and is as tough as its native habitat suggests. Plant in full sun, reflected heat, and in well drained soils. It also handles shade for part of the day. Supplemental irrigation will increase the growth rate, but plants will adapt to low water amounts as well.
