Justicia candicans (Red Justicia)

Justicia candicans
Red Justicia, Pink Dianthera, Arizona Water Willow, Dianthera candicans, Jacobinia mexicana

Red Justicia is a small, upright shrub native to central and southern Arizona and further south into Sonora, Mexico. This plant is an absolute hummingbird magnet, attracting pollinators for most of the year. Blooms are tubular and red to red-orange in color, produced spring through fall. Plants look best in partial shade here in the low desert, and can even bloom if in full shade. Supplemental weekly irrigation will keep Red Justicia looking its best through the summer months. Red Justicia is evergreen, but winter temperatures of 25 degrees or lower will cause significant foliage damage. Plants will recover from the roots once spring temperatures start to rise.
