This medium sized evergreen shrub is native to the rocky slopes of southeastern Arizona, New Mexico, Texas & Mexico at elevations of 2100-5000'. It has a moderate growth rate to about 8' tall by 10' wide. The dark green compound leaves have thick waxy lance-shaped leaflets with pointed tips. New growth may appear bronze-red as it first emerges. It grows well in full sun or part shade but requires good drainage. Clusters of small white flowers in the spring are followed by showy red berries. In the low desert, partial shade is preferred.
