Senna phyllodinea (Silvery Senna, Silvery Cassia)

Senna phyllodinea
Silvery Senna, Silvery Cassia

This large evergreen Australian shrub has shiny silver-grey sickle-shaped phyllodes in place of true leaves. The shimmering silver foliage provides a wonderful foil for the masses of showy yellow flowers that cover the plant from December through April. These flowers appear in branched terminal clusters, and are followed by papery brown pods that persist on the plant. Plant in full sun and reflected heat exposures. Silvery Senna is an ideal choice for hot parking lots or roadways. It prefers good drainage, and excess irrigation will result in larger, leggier specimens. Hardy to 20º F. USDA Zone 9.
