Teucrium chamaedrys (Germander)

Teucrium chamaedrys
Germander, Wall Germander, Ground Oak, Horse Chive, Wild Germander

This tough, low growing, evergreen plant is native to the rocky, dry hillsides of the Mediterranean. It tolerates full sun and reflected heat, as well as very cold temperatures. It forms a small spreading mound to 1 to 2 feet tall. The dark green leaves are small with serrated margins. Spikes of pink-purple flowers adorn the plants in the spring, and intermittently throughout the cooler parts of the year. Plants respond well to pruning in the late winter months, and tip pruning to remove spent blossom spikes is recommended. It prefers well-drained soils.
